Metalworking Fluids

Metalworking fluids (MWFs) are a type of industrial fluids specifically designed for use in metalworking processes, including cutting, grinding, milling, drilling, and forming operations. These fluids serve multiple purposes, such as lubrication, cooling, chip removal, and corrosion protection. Based on their application and composition, MWFs can be classified into following categories:

Key aspects of metalworking fluids

Straight Oils (Neat Oils): Straight oils are mineral or petroleum-based lubricants used in heavy-duty machining operations and for difficult-to-machine materials. They offer superior lubrication and cooling properties without being diluted with water, but their higher viscosity may require additional cleaning steps.
Soluble Oils: Soluble oils are emulsions of mineral oils or synthetic lubricants in water, containing additives like emulsifiers and corrosion inhibitors. Widely used in machining operations, they provide good lubrication, cooling, and corrosion protection while being easy to handle and clean.
Semi-Synthetic Fluids: Semi-synthetic fluids are blends of synthetic and mineral oils. They offer a balance between lubrication and cooling, providing improved performance compared to straight oils in terms of cooling and cleanliness while maintaining good lubricity.
Synthetic Fluids: Synthetic fluids are fully synthetic lubricants formulated for metalworking. Composed of synthetic base oils and additives, they offer high-performance lubrication, cooling, and corrosion protection. Synthetic fluids have excellent thermal stability, extended tool life, and improved surface finish, making them suitable for high-speed and precision machining.
Semi-Dry and Dry Lubricants: Semi-dry and dry lubricants are solid or near-solid materials applied directly to cutting tools or work-piece surfaces. They reduce friction and heat generation during metalworking, improving tool life and surface finish. Examples include graphite, molybdenum disulfide, and ceramic coatings.
