Gear Oils
Axles and Manual Transmission Oil (Drive line oils)
Axles, differentials, final drives, and other gear sets utilized in stationary or mobile equipment applications necessitate specific lubricants tailored to withstand heavy load, high speed, and shock-loading. The inherent sliding and rolling forces demand unique attributes in a lubricant. These attributes are associated with the construction designs of different types of gear sets and their relevant operational function such as, high slide angles found in high off-set hypoid (ring and pinion) gears.
Gear lubricants exhibit notable differences, particularly in the additive technology employed often suitable for some or certain scenarios only.
SAE and API (Society of Automotive Engineers and American Petroleum Institute, respectively) have issued specifications, which are widely used, to standardize requirements of various manufacturers in different applications as shown in the table below. These may not be interchangeable therefore, requiring the guidance of a lubrication specialist to ensure informed decisions.
Some gear oil additives are designed with requirements of the most commonly used gear sets in focus. Common gear types are:
Hypoid Gear, Spiral Bevel Gear, Bevel Gears, Worm Gear, Miter Gear, Herringbone Gear, Helical Gear, Planetary, and Spur Gear.
SAE J2360 | API GL-6 | API GL-5 | API MT-1 | API GL-4 | API GL-3 | API GL-2 | API GL-1 |
Current | Obsolete | Current | Current | Active | Obsolete | Obsolete | Active |
Highly loaded hypoid gears | High off-set hypoid gears | Axle gears (hypoid) | Special application manual transmission | Most manual transmissions |
It is crucial for equipment owners, operators, and lubrication technicians to identify the manufacturer’s recommended specification for each machine and gear set.
