Anti-freeze and Engine Coolants

At its core, a coolant is a heat transfer medium. Circulating within a closed-loop system, the coolant passes through channels within the engine, absorbing heat generated by the cylinder block and head. This absorbed heat is then efficiently transported to the radiator, where it dissipates, allowing the engine to maintain its optimal operating temperature, regardless of whether it’s subjected to scorching heat or freezing cold.

As a heat transfer medium, water is very efficient. However, water alone poses limitations such as the freezing and boiling points, corrosion resistance, rust prevention, and compatibility with seals and gaskets. To overcome these weaknesses and enhance the efficacy of coolant systems, specifically designed additives to combat corrosion, rust, and build-up of deposits are incorporated into coolant formulations. These additives, when combined with the water and glycol mixture, serve a multitude of functions, notably lowering the freezing point and elevating the boiling point, forming protective barriers, shielding vulnerable surfaces from the corrosive effects of coolant in the coolant mixture.

Color of a coolant or an anti-freeze fluid does not ensure any performance standard. They are dyed with colors to avoid accidents.

Key aspects of types of coolants:

Type A coolant, contains a type of glycol to give it its lowered freezing point and raised boiling point along with inhibitor additives.
Type B coolant, contains only the inhibitors and do not have the anit-freeze or anti-boiling properties—used where these two are not essential and simply the heat transfer properties of water are a priority.
