Engine Oils and Lubricants

The railroad sector, much like the marine sector, utilizes various categories of lubricants, including compressor oils, hydraulic fluids, and various types of greases. These lubricants typically exhibit higher performance characteristics due to their longer drain intervals and continuous operation requirements.

However, railroad engine lubricants are relatively different, employing specially designed zinc-free (ashless) and chlorine-free additive packages that are specifically suited to the construction and metallurgy of railroad engines. These lubricants are tailored to meet operational requirements such as high power density, adaptability, responsiveness to variable loads, long maintenance intervals, low oil consumption, high fuel efficiency, and strict emissions control.

API specifications for railroad engine lubricant performance revolve around API CD / CF / CF-2, similar to some marine engines, concerning oxidation stability, deposit control, and detergency / dispersancy. However, in response to a number of additional performance requirements and the ability to handle fuel sulfur content, railroad engine lubricants are classified by Generations, tailored specifically for locomotive applications, which must be addressed by the additives used in formulating the lubricant.

Due to their unique performance attributes, railroad diesel engines are often adapted for use in other sectors including heavy industry, marine, off-shore drilling, and power generation.

As older technology engines are gradually phased out due to age, increasingly stringent emission regulations, and various other performance-based criteria, Generation 7 (low SAPS) lubricants will eventually become more prevalent. However, at present, and for the foreseeable future, Generation 5 and specifically Generation 6 lubricants will remain widely used.
