4-stroke and 2-stroke Engine Oils (4T and 2T)

Small engine oils, typically air-cooled and sometimes liquid-cooled, often labeled as 4T (four-stroke) and 2T (two-stroke), are specifically formulated to meet the lubrication needs of different types of small engines commonly found in:

Motorcycles,
Scooters,
Outboard marine engines,
Jet skis,
ATVs,
Lawn equipment, and
Power equipment.

4T (Four-Stroke) Small Engine Oils:

As the name suggests, these engine oils are designed specifically for four-stroke combustion cycle engine.

The 4T engine oils are much closer to PCMO gasoline engine oils than their 2T counterparts which have a two-stroke combustion cycle.

Typically, 4T engine oils’ performance specification is stated as a combination of API specification and JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization) standards. Such as, ‘API SL / JASO MA2’ where the SL specification exerts control over the lubrication, detergency, wear protection, corrosion control aspects amongst several others, the MA2 standard signifies the frictional capability of the lubricant as it is a crucial component in a 4T lubricant due to the common engine, gearbox, and clutch lubricant design.

In 1998 JASO categorized two kinds of oils—MB and MA. MB oils are the lowest friction oils as there application is isolated to engines only and do not have required frictional properties of the MA specification which is designed for a common engine, gearbox, and clutch lubricant. MA specification was further divided into MA1 and MA2 category in 2006.

2T (Two-Stroke) Small Engine Oils:

Two-stroke gasoline engines require oil to be mixed with fuel for lubrication. This makes them vastly different from the 4T engine oils. Two-stroke engines are commonly air-cooled in smaller applications and water cooled in outboard marine application.
