Automatic Transmission Fluids (Drive line oils)
While there are several lesser known sets of specifications for automatic transmission fluids in the industry, General Motors’ (GM’s) trade marked DEXRON® series of specifications dominate the market.
ATFs are a complex multifaceted fluid fulfilling its role not only as a power transfer medium but meeting a range of requirements which, over time, has seen numerous additions and stricter limits for the existing ones.
ATFs continue to evolve becoming longer lasting and better performing in terms of fuel efficiency, seal compatibility, better heat tolerance and dispersion, shear and general degradation resistance and enhanced frictional properties.
Other Types of Automatic Transmissions:
- CVT (constantly variable transmission)
- DCT / DSG (dual clutch or twin clutch / direct shift transmissions)
These require their own specific types of fluids.
